Silo accessories: what are they and what are they used for?

An industrial silo is not simply a structure designed for storage. To properly manage material during loading, storage and discharge, different silo accessories may be required, selected according to the characteristics of the stored product and specific operating requirements.

Filters, valves, level indicators, weighing systems, devices designed to facilitate discharge and control systems contribute to the correct management of the silo and the material it contains.

The configuration is therefore not necessarily the same for every application: cement, lime, fly ash, premixed products, flour, granules and other bulk materials may require different solutions.

What are silo accessories used for?

Accessories make it possible to complete and configure the silo according to the process in which it is used. They can operate during loading, control internal conditions, monitor the quantity of material stored or facilitate its extraction.

The choice depends on several factors, including the type of material, particle size, bulk density, flowability, silo capacity and loading and discharge methods.

For this reason, accessories should be considered during the definition of the storage system rather than simply as additional components.

What are the main silo accessories?

There are many possible configurations. The most commonly used accessories in industrial storage systems include filtration systems, pressure control devices, level monitoring systems, weighing systems, fluidisation systems, vibration systems, valves and safety devices.

Dust filters

During the pneumatic loading of powdered materials, the air introduced into the silo must be discharged while limiting the dispersion of particles.

The dust filter, installed at the top of the silo, separates dust from the air generated during loading, helping to reduce emissions and keep the operating area cleaner.

The choice of filtration system must take into account the characteristics of the material being handled, including its particle size and the nature of the powder.

Pressure control valves

During loading and discharge operations, variations in internal pressure may occur. Pressure control valves operate in the event of overpressure or negative pressure conditions, helping to protect the structure.

Pressure management is particularly important in systems where the material is loaded pneumatically.

Level indicators and monitoring systems

Knowing the quantity of material inside the silo makes it possible to plan loading operations and material use.

Level indicators and level sensors make it possible to monitor silo filling and can be integrated with control systems to display the quantities available.

Depending on the configuration, different solutions can be used to detect minimum, maximum or intermediate levels.

Weighing systems

When the process requires control of the quantity of material stored or extracted, the silo can be equipped with weighing systems.

The use of load cells makes it possible to measure weight and integrate this information into material management, dosing and monitoring processes.

How can material discharge from a silo be improved?

Not all bulk materials flow in the same way. Some powders can become compacted or form accumulations that make extraction less consistent.

Different systems can be used to facilitate material flow, selected according to the characteristics of the stored product.

Vibrators and percussion systems

Vibrators can be installed to facilitate the movement of material towards the discharge point and counteract compaction or bridging.

The type, position and operating method must be defined according to the material stored and the geometry of the silo.

Fluidisation systems

For certain powdered materials, fluidisation systems can be used to introduce air into the lower section of the silo and improve material mobility.

This solution can be particularly useful with materials such as cement, lime, fly ash and other powders that may present flow difficulties.

Fluidisation can therefore contribute to more consistent discharge and help reduce residual material inside the silo.

Valves and control systems

Valves regulate the opening, closing and flow of material during the different operating stages. Depending on the configuration, butterfly valves and manual, pneumatic or electric control systems can be used.

Correct sizing makes it possible to coordinate the silo with downstream systems such as screw conveyors, dosing units or other devices used for material handling.

Silo safety accessories

The configuration of a silo must also take into account access, inspection and maintenance activities.

Ladders, guardrails, protective devices and other components can be integrated into the structure to allow the required operations to be carried out under the conditions defined by the project.

Pressure control systems, indicators and monitoring devices also contribute to the management of silo operating conditions.

Are the accessories the same for every type of silo?

No. The configuration varies according to the type of silo, the material and the production process.

Monolithic vertical silos, telescopic vertical silos, bolted vertical silos and horizontal silos have different construction and application characteristics and may therefore require specific equipment.

Even two silos of the same type can be configured differently when they are intended to store materials with different characteristics.

How to choose silo accessories

The choice should begin with an analysis of the material and the way in which it is handled. Factors to consider include:

  • type and characteristics of the material;
  • particle size and bulk density;
  • flowability and tendency to compact;
  • loading method and frequency;
  • discharge system;
  • weighing and dosing requirements;
  • monitoring and control requirements;
  • environmental and operating conditions.

There is therefore no universal configuration. The objective is to identify the accessories actually required to ensure that the silo, the material and the handling systems operate in a coordinated manner.

Filtration, pressure control, monitoring, weighing and systems designed to facilitate discharge are all part of a configuration that must be defined by considering the entire process.
